Cruise boats boost tourism in Portimao area

Earlier this week more than two thousand passengers disembarked from the four-star cruise liner 'Oceana' and into Portimão, giving the city a hefty boost in one fell swoop while at the same.

Earlier this week more than two thousand passengers disembarked from the four-star cruise liner 'Oceana' and into Portimão, giving the city a hefty boost in one fell swoop while at the same time discovering what is fast becoming one of the most sought-after southern European destinations.

After departing from Southampton on August 8th, the city of Portimão is one of the first port-of-calls on the cruise's two-week Mediterranean journey.

On-board were 2,126 passengers and 894 crew members, the majority of whom disembarked at Portimão.

Portimão will be followed by other Mediterranean cities including Barcelona, Monte Carlo and Rome, Calvi (Corsica), Cartagena and Gibraltar.

Belonging to P&O, the 'Oceana' is renowned for its opulence and boasts large palm trees in the atrium, a casino, a 530-person theatre, four swimming pools, and a golf simulator, amongst other luxury features.

It can carry a maximum of three thousand passengers.

The ship's Captain, David Parkins, spoke to official Portimão Town Hall representatives during the stop-off and expressed his admiration of the city as well as how important the improvements made to the port's infrastructures are for large vessels. He also said it would make it easier for regular visits by P&O cruises.

It is predicted that throughout this year some 30,000 tourists will stop off at Portimão. time discovering what is fast becoming one of the most sought-after southern European destinations.
