With a total cost of €195 million (approximately $250 million), the project includes a karting track, technology park, five-star hotel, sports complex and apartments. The circuit opened in November 2008 with the worldcup superbikes just 2 days after the construction was finished and the circuit licensed. The circuit celebrates its first year of existence and with over 500.000 visitors it is a big success. As motor sport is the key component of the project, it has been overseen since the beginning by the world governing bodies, the FIA and the FIM. The plans for the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve were approved by the FIA for Formula 1 and by the FIM for SuperBikes. The total capacity of the circuit is 100,000 spectators, with 15,000 seats in the main stand and the remaining seats in other stands, and standing room in areas around the track. From all positions the circuit offers a good overview for the spectators to enjoy a day at the races. There are private boxes in the grand stand and above the pit lane, in the middle of the circuit is the VIP tower which has a range of services such as catering.
